Public transport allows for the mobility and access for residents across Windhoek. The City of Windhoek operates the main public transport system, which over the years has been characterised by overcrowding, as the demand continues to outweigh supply. Therefore, the overall objective of the assignment was to improve the existing bus operations of City of Windhoek, making them more reliable, efficient and customer friendly. Specifically, the assignment entailed:
- Developing a holistic Strategy to systematically establish and build up bus stop/shelter infrastructure in line with proposed future operations
- Undertaking a Bus Network Review, to support the Public Transport Division (COW) to develop a reliable and functional bus schedule and timetables that are realistic to commuters and bus drivers
The team engaged with all relevant stakeholders whilst conducting a review of the current bus network, and allowed for the proposed plans to be tailored to the needs of the users. Design guidelines for bus stops/shelters were developed and advertisement opportunities and estimates of revenues from advertising were identified.
